Message from the President

(Dear Mumni and Jriends of the College:

Welcome to our 32nd Homecoming Reunion
Celebration. Planning for this event has been a high
priority for the National Alumni Association and the
College. Our goal is to make this weekend enjoy-
able, informative, and commemorative.

The new millennium is right before us, and
Oakwood College is preparing for it in a variety of
ways. Our strategic goals are clear: spiritual vitahty,
educational excellence, a nurturing environment,
operational efficiency resource development, insti-
tutional relations, and technology leadership.

Currently we are preparing for the new mil-
lennium and the Second Coming of Christ by such
activities as: COUNTDOWN 2000, a new emphasis
on the integration of faith and learning in an Adventist
context, collaboration with other institutions of
higher learning, distance learning, and other pro-
grams. Of course, a high point is our plan to become
a university with graduate programs by year 2002.

As you prepare for the future, please plan to
spend extra time on campus for the special pro-
grams connected with "Alumni 2000." So during
this 1999 homecoming, let's enjoy our time together
and jointly commit to helping Oakwood achieve the
highest possible standard of excellence.

Be sure we are collectively committed to do
our part to continue preparing our students aca-
demically as well as spiritually with the very best in
Education and Excellence, while preparing for
Eternity.

May God continue to bless you with the richest
blessing and success.

Very sincerely

Delbert W. Baker, Ph.D.
President

Welcome to the TkirUj-Second Annuat
Oa(;pood Cotiege Mumni ^omecomingill

Alumni and friends, this pre-millennium home-
coming reunion should cause us to reflect on the
blessings that our God has poured upon our cam-
pus and the hves of its graduates.

We are excited about seeing the vast improve-
ments on our campus and chatting with classmates
from the years of the 9's, the 25 th and 50 year
classes.

Please avail yourselves to all of the planned
activities for this weekend. Take the time out to
speak and encourage students on the campus.

We are again seeking mentors for our students.
They need the expert guidance that you can convey
to them.

On behalf of the OCAA Executive Officers and
Alumni Members we are privileged to welcome you
back home.

Edward Woods, Jr. President
Oakwood College Alumni Association

Advancement andT)eveio^ment

(Dear friends:

We stand on the threshold of a new century, it
is just months away. This Homecoming is the last
one of the nineteen hundreds. The historic events
surrounding a millennial change are exciting. It also
reminds us that we are people of prophecy, and the
hastening of the day of the Lord is more of a reahty
that ever before.

However, we have a big job of winning the world
for Christ in the few remaining years. This is why
we hope you remember that a donation to the

Oakwood College Alumni Association is helping in
the overall task that Oakwood College has of train-
ing young workers in accomphshing the mission of
the Church. Welcome home!

Best Wishes,

Auldwin T. Humphrey

Vice-President for Advancement & Development

1999 "Parents of the Jear
Cainf and Lois J^ranlqe Lester

Cairy and Lois Frankie Fordham Lester are avid
supporters of Christian Education, Oakwood College,
and the A. Samuel Rashford Chapter of the Oakwood
College Alumni Association.

Lois Frankie graduated valedictorian with a B.S. in
Elementary Education from Oakwood in 1958. She
earned her M.A. degree from Tennessee State. She is
presently completing her 36th year as a teacher in the
Seventh-day Adventist School system. She was awarded
the Zapara Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990. Lois,
daughter of the late Elder Walter W. Fordham, is a sec-
ond generation Oakwood graduate.

Though a graduate with a B.S. degree from Ohio
State University, Cairy and his wife desired that their
children partake of the "Oakwood Experience" so they
sent all six of them to Oakwood College:
Karen: 1985 Oakwood graduate with a B.S. in
Business Administration and Computer
Science. Presently an accountant for Lake
Region Conference in Chicago. Her church
activities include Sabbath School Teacher,
Investment Leader, and Deaconess.
Lynette: 1987 Oakwood graduate with B.S. in busi-
ness. Presently a S.D.A. educator teaching
in College Park, Florida.
Cairy II: Cum Laude Oakwood graduate 1987 with
a B.S. in Economics. 1994 graduate. Uni-

versity of California with a J.S. degree. He
is employed by Bank of America. Cairy
serves as a Sabbath School Teacher.
Lois Marie: Summa Cum Laude 1994 Oakwood gradu-
ate with B.S. in Social Work. Master's de-
gree 1995 from Ohio State University
Presently employed as a Chnical Director
of Youth Services in Columbus, Ohio.
Lisa: 1997 Oakwood graduate with a B.S. in Edu-

cation. She is employed as a teacher in
Atlanta, Georgia.
Lorice: 1997 Oakwood graduate, A.S. degree in
Nursing. She is a registered nurse employed
at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma
Park, Maryland.
Parents, Cairy and Lois give God the glory for provid-
ing the means, through hard work, grants, and sacrifice,
that enabled them to provide an Oakwood education for
their children. They now look forward to their 7 grand-
children: Lillian, David, Mariah, Jocelyn, Cierra, Catrine,
and Nia to carry the torch and become distinguished
alumni of Oakwood College during the 21st Century

Oakwood has helped the Lester children develop
talents and abihties and also provide preparation for
the heavenly kingdom. All six children are practicing
members and workers for the Seventh-day Adventist
Church!

The restoration and uplifting of humanity begins in the home. The work of parents underlies
every other. Society is composed of femilies, and what the heads of families make it. Out of the
heart are '^e issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23); and the heart of the community, of the church, and
of the nation is the household. The well being of society, the success of the church, the prosperity
of the nation depends upon home influences.

Life is a training school from which Parents and Children are to be graduated to the higher
school in the mansions of God.

THE GOAL OF TRUE EDUCATION
By Gary P. Frost

The goal of education Is the students preparation

A person trained to know and stand for truth

the buillding is not able, nor are desks, or chairs or table.

Not even school committees can be proof.

But for those who sometimes waver there is a "student saver".

It's deep withing the hearts and pocketbooks

Of people who are caring and whose time and love are sharing

Upholding Christ who on their children looks.

For the training that they're gaining they'll not soon be disdaining

Instead they will give heedence to His call.

And when faced with tribulation or dishonest situations

they'll stand for right though all the heaven fall.

Then when Earth's class is ended and the children

you have tended

Will gather at the Master Teacher's knee

All the joy upon their faces earthly failures soon erases

At the commencement of Eternity.

(Dr. QwendoCyn (Burton-Ward

Gwendolyn Burton-Ward is a native of Los Angles
California, bom to Seventh-day Adventist parents. She
and her five brothers and sisters were all products of
Christian Education.

She received an Associate of Arts Degree in the
field of Real Estate Education at which time she be-
came a successful Broker in the State of Cahfornia.

Her husband, a well-known Adventist Minister
accepted a call to Oakwood College to build the first
campus church since its inception in 1896. While
pastoring this congregation for twenty-one (21) con-
secutive years, Gwen took advantage of the educational
programs offered by Oakwood College.

In addition to her closely working with her hus-
band. Pastor Eric Calvin Ward, she received a B.S.
Degree in 1975 from Oakwood. Upon completing this
degree in Business administration (summa cum
laude) she worked with Beverly Clark-McDonald for
two plus years in the Oakwood's Uitorial Program
helping students with low GPA's improve their grades.
Gwen and Bev also did most of the layout work for
the 1975 College Yearbook after the elected editor
left Alabama for another assignment.

In 1979 Gwen received a second B.S. Degree fi-om
Oakwood College in Business Education, also gradu-
ating Summa Cum Laude. She assisted her husband
as secretary for the campus church for several years
while matriculating at Alabama A & M University in

Normal, Alabama. From this institution she received
a Masters Degree in 1983 in the area of Business Edu-
cation, graduating with high honors.

After receiving proper teaching credentials, she
has taught school - both pubhc and private - in the
states of California, Georgia and Alabama.

For the last few years she has been Secretary and
Office Manager to Fred Pullins in the Alumni Rela-
tions' Department located in East Hall on the beauti-
ful campus of Oakwood. This position which involved
many alumni and other college relative activities, gave
her the privilege of working closely with both the
National and Regional Leaders in the North American
Division.

While pursuing the latter position at Oakwood,
Gwen finally completed her Doctor of Philosophy
Degree this year in the field of Education from LSU in
Louisiana, graduating with a 4.0 grade point average.
Gwen has been married to Pastor Eric Calvin Ward
for over fifty years, and they are the proud parents of
two grown sons and four grown daughters aU of whom
have graduated from Adventist Institutions. Five of the
six attended Oakwood College and are now engaged
in professional occupations.

The Wards have always been devoted, dedicated,
staunch behevers, as well as promoters of Christian
Education, and they are happy and elated to have been
associated with Oakwood College for over half a century

She lived a life of service, for nigh a hundred years. She witness with kind
words and deeds, wherever she saw a need. She taught the love of Jesus
in her home and public life. In churches, prisons, nursing homes she sought
to ease the strife. She witnessed from her garden where she planted food,
fruit and flowers. She shared the love of Jesus to all who crossed her path.

Dear Dr. Gwendolyn M. Ward:

We are very pleased to add our commendations to all of those who are recognizing you
as Alumna of the year. This is a magnificent honor. This is truly a significant time for
you and your family. Because of your altruistic attrtude, we have selected the following
excerpts "On Giving" from the book. The Prophet by Kahil Gibran:

"There are those who give little of the much which they have — and they give it for
recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome.

And there are those who have little and give it all.

These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty.

There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.

And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism.

And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor
give with mindfulness of virtue;

They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space.

Through the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He
smiles upon the earth.

It is well to give v^en asked, but it is better to give unasked through understanding;
and to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving.

May God's abundant blessings be yours today, and in the days ahead.
Shalom,

The Fund Raising Committee,

Thomas Marshall Kelly entered this hfe in Cleve-
land, Ohio. His parents, Louis and Mary Kelly both
sang in the church choir. His mother, Mary Kelly is
still living and active at the age of 99-

While attending church school, Mrs. Ivory Parks
started Marshall and four other boys singing in a quar-
tet. During the next fifty-four years, four of them
(including Marshall) continued to sing together and
adopted the name of the "Cleveland Harmoneers."
The Harmoneers have sung for such grand occasions
as the ASI convention in Toronto, Canada and for the
ASI Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

After attending high school at Oakwood Academy
Marshall was privileged to sing in the Oakwood Col-
lege Male Chorus directed by the incomparable Elder
C.E. Mosley Marshall also sang bass in the Oakwood
College Velvatone Quartet which toured throughout
the United States. At Emmanuel Missionary College
(now Andrews University) he was given the opportu-
nity to sing in the "Collegians," directed by Mr. Melvin
Davis.

Marshall Kelly has been privileged to be the Week
of Prayer speaker for Oakwood College, Andrews Uni-
versity, and the Adventist Media Center; also several
academies in North and South America. While serv-
ing as Bible teacher and Chaplain at Oakwood Acad-
emy he received the Zapara Award to teaching.

He is the husband of one wife, Jean, for 46 years,
and the father of two children, Eric and Nadine. There
are three grandchildren, Justin and Marrisa Kelly and
Korey Wilhams.

Marshall Kelly has been privileged to sing for such
inspirational evangelists as E.E. Cleveland, Don
Jacobsen, CD. Brooks, John Carter, and WC. Scales,
Jr. His travels have taken him throughout the United
States, Canada, Austraha (three times) , New Zealand,
New Guinea, Fiji, and Ghana in Africa. Since 1996 he
has traveled with the Voice of Prophecy for several of
their "Vision Builders" weekends. In 1997 the Lord
allowed him to travel to Cape Town, South Africa to
sing for an evangehstic crusade with Elder Tim Lewis
and his team where he witnessed the baptism of 11 87
souls in one day

"// takes Everything to Serve the Lord, " "Songs
to Remember" and "Never Doubt His Love" are the
three albums that have been produced during his years
of service. The Breath of Life has made a compilation
compact disc entitled, "Songs of Lnspiration."

"So many people have helped, encouraged and
prayed for me. ..Lean only say, to God be the glory. "
"My greatest joy is singing for the sick, the shut-in,
and the lonely. " - T. Marshall Kelly

have donated funds to worthy students.

For more than eight years, Mrs. McChristian-Allen

Jofm H. T^ittman, Jr.

John H. Tillman, Jr., son of John H. and Hattie
Tillman, was bom in Cleveland, Ohio. He relocated to
Charlotte, N.C., where he was baptized at the Berea
S.D.A. Church. He attended Berea Elementary Church
School, graduated salutatorian and continued his edu-
cation at Oakwood Academy. Due to family illness, he
returned home after two years and matriculated at
Second Ward High School. He was an "Honor" stu-
dent, sang in the choir, and played the saxophone. In
his church, he served as M.V. (AY) Leader, Sabbath
School Teacher, and conducted the Sabbath School
Instructors Course for Berean teachers.

After high school graduation, John attended
Oakwood College for two years. He returned to Char-
lotte where he married the late Charlotte Little. They
were parents of 3 children: the late John Tillman III,
Ivy Denise Tillman, and Marea Ford.

Again he was active in Berea, serving as an or-
dained Elder, Sabbath School Supt. and teacher. Choir
Director, Male Chorus Director, Religious Liberty and
Personal Ministries Leader.

In i960 he came to New York City and chose
Ephesus as his home church. Activities for him at
Ephesus included: Youth and Earliteen Supt. and
teacher. Youth Church Elder, Associate AY Leader,
Founder of Ephesus Adventist Men's Organization,
Rehgious Liberty Leader, Communications Leader,

Sponsor of Ephesus Softball Team, Youth Federation
President, and Board chairman of the Harlem Trail-
blazers Community Services, Inc. John led out in
"Smoking Sam" presentations in schools, hospitals,
tent efforts, health fairs and churches.

He promoted oratorical and poster contests and
gave new meaning to the temperance Motto: "In Christ
We Are Fit and Free."

As a result of an accident, John had two major
brain surgeries. Determination, therapy and prayer
empowered him to walk and run again. He continues
to improve. In just 5 years after the accident, he gradu-
ated from the State Lfniversity of New York earning a
B.S. degree in Liberal Arts. He is also certified in Al-
cohol Counseling.

John spent much of this time prior to the acci-
dent presenting messages on Substance Abuse and
the Family. His emphasis was on "Love" a concept of
mental, physical, and spiritual connection between
the man, the woman, and Jesus.

Our honoree comes from a family that has al-
ways supported Christian education. His youngest
grandson, Charles Roberts, is presently a sophomore
at Oakwood Academy.

John is a "Life Member" of Oakwood College Na-
tional Alunmi Association and an active member of
the A. Samuel Rashford Chapter in New York City.

ENCOMIUM FOR A BELOVED FRIEND,

TO WHOM MUCH WAS GIVEN,

AND OF WHOM IS STILL MUCH REQUIRED

JOHX HENRY TILLMAN

The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, as realized by Jack Blanco

in The Clear Word

IF I had the gift of speaking any language, including the language that
angels use, but I didn't have love, I would be like a noisy gong or clanging
cymbals. If I had the gift of predicting the future and could understand all
science and fathom all knowledge, or if I had so much faith that I could move
mountains, but I didn't have love, I would be worthless. If I gave everything
I had to the church and had enough money to feed the world, or if I became a
martyr by being burned to death for Christ, but didn't have love, all such acts
would count for nothing.

LOVE is patient and kind. It doesn't envy, and it doesn't focus on itself or puff
up with its own importance. LOVE is never rude nor does it behave itself
unbecomingly. It's not interested in its own advantages. It doesn't keep a
record of wrongs. LOVE thinks the best. LOVE doesn't enjoy evil, but finds
joy in truth. LOVE bears all things, hopes for all things and endures all things.
LOVE will never fail.

THERE are three important things in life. Faith in God, hope for the future and
Christ-like LOVE, but the greatest of these is LOVE.

WE PRAY YOUR STRENGTH, CELEBRATE YOUR VICTORIES,
AND CONGRATULATE YOUR FETING

South CentraC Conference

(Danny Chandier

Bom in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1962, Danny
is the fourth of 5 children born to the late Ray C.
Chandler, Sr. and Mary W. Bankhead Chandler His
parents joined the Seventh-day Adventist church
under the evangelistic efforts of Elder Earl Howard
and Elder J.P. "Pop" WiUis in the late 1950's.

Danny graduated from S.D. Lee High in 1980 with
several honors including DAR Citizenship Award,
National Honor Society, ranked in the top 10 in the
graduating class. Hall of Fame, Class Historian, and
Senior Most Likely to Succeed.

In August 1980, he began matriculating at
Oakwood College. There he was involved in Oratori-
cal and Poetry contests, worked with the yearbook
staff, and played intramural sports. He held campus
jobs as a Biology Lab Assistant, Resident Assistant, and
Physics Lab Instructor. In 1984, he graduated with
honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathemat-
ics and a minor in Chemistry. Other honors received
at Oakwood include Scholastic Achievement Award
and C.E. Mosely Pioneer Service Award.

After attending Mississippi State University where
he took graduate courses in Statistics and taught
undergraduate Math courses, he began work profes-

sionally with the Mississippi Department of Transpor-
tation in 1987. This same year, he married the former
Reta Boone of Albany, Georgia, whom he met at
Oakwood College. They have one son, Daniel Ryan.

Mr Chandler has also earned an Associates de-
gree in Accounting, and is trained as an Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT) . He is currently employed
as a Business Systems Analyst with the Mississippi State
Department of Health and an EMT with American
Medical Response, in Jackson, Mississippi.

He has served in various offices in the local
church, including Deacon, Sabbath School Superin-
tendent, AYS Leader, Elder, Assistant to the Pastor, and
Rehgious Liberty Leader He is currently a member of
the South Central Conference Executive Committee and
a contributing writer hx Message Magazine and Signs
of the Times.

Mr Chandler is most thankful for being led to
start Mississippi FOCUS, a program that has great
potential to give back to Oakwood College. It is an
investment in our youth, and in doing the work of
ministry. This scholarship program will help educate
and train leaders to finish God's work.

MY CRBEJD

To live as gently as I can;

To be, no matter -where, a man;

To take what comes of good ill

A.nd cling to faith and honor still

To do my best, and let that stand

The record of my brain and hand;

A.nd then, should failure come to me.

Still work and hope for victory .

To have secret place wherein

J stoop unseen to shame or sin;

To be the same when I'm alone

A.nd when my every deed is knoyvn;

To live undaunted and unafraid

Of any step that I have made;

To be without pretense or shame

Exactly what men think I am.

To leave some simple mark behind

To keep my having lived in mind;

If enmity to aught I show.

To be an honest, generous foe.

To play my little part, nor whine

That greater honors are not mine.

This, I believe, is all I need

For my philosophy and creed.

gcFiooC Song

To Thee Our Dear Oakwood

Written by O. B. Edwards

Chorus

To thee, our dear Oakwood,

To thee we shall ever sing.
For decades thou has stood;

Thy name shall ever ring.

Here we've spent our happy days.

So we love to sing thy praise.

And wherever we may be
We'll always be true to thee,

Our worthy dear old O.C.

One

Our dear Oakwood within whose vales

Thy standards will not fail;

Our hearts are filled with wondrous cheer

When thoughts of thee draw near.

We love thy pines, thy elms, thy oaks

And campus always green.

The many flowers and distant mounts.

Form one impressive scene.

Two

From states afar and isles of sea

Thy students come to thee.

And fain do linger in thy halls

Enlightened truthfully.

From nature's scenes they ever learn

And study from the soil;

Till many more thy works discern.

We'll pray for thee and toil.

Three

As happy birds come in the spring

And sing not for their pay.
Rich, natural melodies they bring,

Cheering throughout the day.
We too will serve thee faithfully

In all we do and say.

We hope in God, we trust in thee;

True and loyal we'll be.
